When elected officials criticize the Federal Reserve, one often hears about the Fed’s traditional “independence” from politics. While that tradition stretches back several decades, the Fed has not always been so independent. Moreover, the Fed’s independence has never been comprehensive because it was created by Congress and is a part of the administration. How independent is the Fed in reality and why does it matter? Will the Fed’s independence come under threat? How does that affect the outlook for monetary policy?

Jeffrey M. Lacker served over 12 years as President and CEO of the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond, from August 2004 to April 2017. Since 2023 he has been a Senior Affiliated Scholar at the Mercatus Center at George Mason University and since 2022 he has been a Fellow at the Global Interdependence Center College of Central Bankers. From August 2018 to May 2022, Lacker was a Distinguished Professor in the Department of Economics at the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Business. He is the immediate past Chairman of the Board of Directors of Richmond Jewish Foundation.
